As a commercial lighting designer and supplier, we get asked the question of why our products are classified as commercial-grade lighting. The answer is simple: commercial-grade light products are made of better-quality LED drivers, led modules and made to last longer than residential grade products. For that reason, they are more durable and have an extended lifespan compared to residential lighting options.

Commercial lighting is used for commercial spaces and venues such as offices, stores, shopping centres, hotels, and restaurants, essentially those locations that are not residential, industrial or for manufacturing. Compared to other types of lighting, commercial lighting tends to have a higher initial cost, longer lifespan, better durability and better energy saving options.

Commercial lighting always has an associated IP rating. The IP Code or ‘International Protection Rating’ consists of the letters IP followed by two digits and an optional letter. This code classifies the degrees of protection provided against the intrusion of solid objects, dust, accidental contact, and water in electrical enclosures. The certification aims to provide a more straightforward way of acquiring necessary information rather than undescriptive terms such as “waterproof”. This feature is particularly helpful when you are looking for long-term, year-round outdoor lighting.
